Bathroom Rough-In vs Fit-Off: What’s the Difference?

Bathroom renovation quotes often refer to rough-in and fit-off, but the two stages cover very different parts of the job. Understanding the difference makes it easier to plan trades, order fixtures and avoid delays during a renovation.

For more detail on the service itself, see our bathroom rough-in page.

What is bathroom rough-in?

Rough-in is the stage where plumbing services are installed or repositioned before the finished surfaces are complete. Water lines, wastes, fixture connections and in-wall components are placed so the room is ready for the next construction stages.

  • Water services are positioned for taps, mixers and fixtures.
  • Waste and drainage points are installed or altered.
  • In-wall or concealed components are set in place where required.

What is bathroom fit-off?

Fit-off is the later stage where the visible fixtures and fittings are installed and connected. This can include toilets, basins, vanities, tapware, shower fittings and baths.

Why the fixture schedule matters

The plumber needs accurate product information before rough-in. Different mixers, toilets and vanities can require different outlet positions, so changing products late can cause avoidable rework.

What happens between the two stages?

After rough-in, other work may include wall linings, waterproofing, tiling, cabinetry and painting. The exact order varies by project, but the plumbing rough-in must be coordinated with those trades.

Testing is part of the process

The plumbing should be checked at the appropriate stages and again when fixtures are connected. The goal is to make sure the finished bathroom operates correctly before the renovation is considered complete.

Plan both stages in the original scope

A quote should make it clear whether both rough-in and fit-off are included, particularly when several trades are working on the renovation.
