Modern kitchens often have more plumbing connections than just the sink. Dishwashers, plumbed fridges, filters and specialty tapware can all require water or waste connections, and those services need to be positioned so they remain accessible after cabinetry is installed.
For more detail on the service itself, see our kitchen plumbing page.
Kitchen sink plumbing
The sink needs hot and cold water where required, a suitable waste connection and enough cabinet space for traps, valves and accessories.
Dishwasher connections
A dishwasher generally needs a water connection and a waste connection. Hoses should be routed without being crushed or kinked when the appliance is pushed into place.
Plumbed fridge connections
Fridges with water and ice functions need a dedicated water connection. The connection should be accessible so the appliance can be isolated if it is moved or develops a leak.
Water filters
Under-sink filters can take more room than expected, especially alongside bins, drawers and waste fittings. Planning the cabinet layout around the plumbing avoids cramped installations.
Isolation matters
Appliances should be able to be isolated for servicing. Hiding valves behind fixed cabinetry or making them impossible to reach creates unnecessary problems later.
Check everything before cabinetry is final
Give the plumber the appliance specifications and cabinet plan early. That way the services can be installed in the correct positions rather than adapted after installation.
