Gas Appliance Installation: What Should Be Checked Before Connection?

A new gas cooktop, oven, heater or other appliance needs more than a nearby gas pipe. The existing supply, appliance specifications, installation location and connection method all need to be suitable before the appliance is commissioned.

For more detail on the service itself, see our gas appliance installation page.

Confirm the appliance requirements

The model and manufacturer information should be available before installation. Different appliances can have different gas, ventilation and clearance requirements.

Check the gas supply

Existing pipework needs to be suitable for the connected appliances. Adding another appliance can change the demand on the system.

Plan the appliance location

Cabinetry, walls, ventilation and service access can all affect where an appliance can be installed and how it is connected.

Make sure isolation is practical

Gas appliances need appropriate isolation so they can be serviced safely in the future.

Do not treat gas like a DIY connection

Gas work should be carried out by an appropriately licensed gas fitter. Connections, testing and commissioning are safety-critical parts of the installation.

Coordinate gas and cabinetry early

For cooktops, ovens and outdoor kitchens, gas points should be positioned before finished cabinetry makes changes difficult.
