Laundry Renovation Plumbing: Planning Sinks, Taps, Waste and Appliances

Laundries are becoming more integrated with cabinetry and storage, which makes plumbing planning more important. A neat finished room still needs accessible valves, reliable drainage and enough space for appliance hoses and wastes.

For more detail on the service itself, see our laundry plumbing page.

Decide the trough or sink location

The laundry sink or trough determines where much of the water and waste plumbing will be concentrated. Moving it may require pipe and drainage alterations.

Plan the washing machine connection

The washing machine needs water supply and waste connections positioned so hoses are not crushed behind the appliance or cabinetry.

Allow room inside cabinetry

Taps, valves, wastes and appliance hoses all take space. Deep drawers and tight cabinetry can clash with plumbing unless the layout is coordinated early.

Think about drainage

Laundry wastes need to discharge correctly, and any existing slow drainage should be addressed before the renovation is closed up.

Check water pressure and old fittings

A renovation is a good opportunity to replace worn valves, hoses or fittings that would otherwise be hidden inside new cabinetry.

Plan the final fit-off

Once the cabinetry and sink are installed, the plumber can connect fixtures and appliances and test the finished laundry plumbing.
