Why Drains Keep Blocking: Common Causes and When to Call a Plumber

A drain that blocks once may have a simple local obstruction. A drain that keeps blocking is different. Repeated problems can indicate a restriction, damaged pipe, tree roots or another issue further along the drainage system.

For more detail on the service itself, see our blocked drains page.

Build-up inside the pipe

Grease, soap, hair and other material can gradually reduce the internal diameter of a drain until normal use causes it to block.

Tree roots

Roots can enter damaged joints or cracks and create recurring restrictions. Clearing the blockage may restore flow temporarily without fixing the damaged section.

Damaged or displaced pipes

Cracked, collapsed or poorly aligned drainage can catch waste and lead to repeated blockages.

The blockage may be further away than you think

If several fixtures are affected, the issue may be in a shared drain rather than the individual sink, shower or toilet.

Why repeated plunging is not enough

A plunger may move a soft local blockage, but it does not diagnose structural problems or remove roots and heavy build-up further along a drain.

When professional drain cleaning helps

Depending on the cause, plumbers may use drain cleaning equipment, high-pressure water jetting or other methods to restore flow.

Recurring blockages need inspection

If the same drain keeps failing, identifying why it blocks is more useful than simply clearing it again.
